If the TSA senses a problem, they must alert the relevant authorities. For example, if TSA discovers a gun in your carry-on luggage, they will hold you and notify airport police. The TSA cannot arrest you, but they may detain you until law enforcement comes.
In the case of immigration, TSA would have to think (for solid cause, not on the spur of the moment) that your immigration status is unlawful, and then keep you until CBP officials arrived. There may not be any CBP officials around if you are at a domestic airport in the United States. I’m not sure how they might believe your immigration status is unlawful unless you explicitly tell them. Although some TSA personnel overstep their limits, which is a legal concern, they should not be going through your passport seeking for a visa.
My advice to all passengers, whether they are lawfully or illegally in the United States, is to declare, “I am not in the United States illegally.” No, I don’t have my paperwork with me.” I get that if you’re illegal, this is lying, but TSA following this route for no cause is like a police officer examining your home without a warrant.
